Sixteen and Finally Read Harry Potter

So, as shown by me talking about reading Red, White & Royal Blue and American Royals in my last blog posts. I started to get back into reading books due to COVID running out of options of things to entertain myself. Years ago, I was given the Harry Potter books but never really cared to read them, but I hit a low point of boredom within the winter break that led me to read them for the first time. So yes, I waited until I was a sophomore in high school and sixteen years old to read Harry Potter for the first time.

I in no way support Joanne the Scammer Rowling's transphobic views and ideologies, this is just something I wanted to do because I've had these books for a long time but haven't read them

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

The Sorcerer's Stone was the first book in the series so it was the first one that I have read. I started this book in middle school by reading the first three pages and put it down. So during the winter, I read this first book in one day, and I genuinely liked this book, and it was one of the more okay books within all of the books in the series. This was an average children’s book, and I enjoyed the story.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

This was the worst book in the entire series in my opinion. Was it utterly terrible? No. But was it amazing? No. This is the most forgettable book in the entire Harry Potter series because it just didn’t have the same wow factor as the rest of the books, leading to it looking more lacking compared to the rest. The only real highlights of this story are Arthur Weasley and Lucius Malfoy fighting in the bookshop, the Weasley family car crashing into the Whomping Willow, and the hilarious titan of Gilderoy Lockhart. That’s it, from 341 pages.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Prisoner of Azkaban is one of my top three favorite books in the series. This was the first book that interested me the most. Harry turning Aunt Marge into a balloon for calling his mom a b*tch pretty much and calling his dad a drunk was the definition of karma. I loved the introduction of the Knight Bus, which is one of my favorite pieces of the Harry Potter universe and it was great to know that the talking Jamaican head was only something in the movies honestly. Dementors are the most terrifying thing I have ever seen in my life, and I would pass out if I say one. So, I felt Harry passing out when he came into contact with those things. The first class that Lupin taught will always remain iconic with the boggart lesson. The firebolt situation made me kind of angry because Hermione was right in that situation, but okay idiotic boys will be idiotic boys. The best part of the book is Lupin talking about the history of the Marauders and the map, that’s something the movies somewhat screwed up.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

I am going to state a somewhat unpopular opinion, Goblet of Fire is my favorite book in the entire series. This book exposed how wizards have no idea of what is going on in the muggle world like seriously y’all are not completely isolated from them. I came to love this book more than any other book, due to the more world-building that the three previous books did not provide in the story. The additions of the Triwizard Tournament and the Quidditch World Cup were able to grow the knowledge of the wizarding community outside of the British community that was the most prominent in the books. So I found it interested to learn about the other international wizarding schools, such as Durmstrang Institute and Beauxbatons.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

In my opinion, this was one of my least favorite books in the series next to Chamber of Secrets. That has to be due to how much fluff and unnecessary descriptions and words annoyed me more than anything. The scenes that annoyed me the most are the cleaning of 12 Grimmauld Place because it was so long and descriptive for no reason, thus the book being 100-150 pages being added to an already long book. Sirius's death in the book was nowhere near as impactful in the novel as it is in the films; I don't know why, but it did not have that much of an impact on me. My favorite parts of the book were the Defense Against the Dark Arts class versus Umbridge that happened on her first day of teaching classes, all of the D.A. meeting scenes are amazing, the introduction to Luna Lovegood's character was done so well, and Harry mourning Sirius's death was so well written and was compatible with his character at this point in life. In conclusion, unnecessarily long book but has very good moments.

Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince

People are going to hate me for having this opinion, but I am going to say it anyway. Half-blood Prince is not the best book in the series, it is okay. The book is pretty good because it's a Harry Potter book, but it is overhyped and over-liked by the community. I think that when it comes to the books where the Second Wizarding War is the main focus of the plot, this one is lacking. Unpopular opinion: Deathly Hallows is better than Half-blood Prince, but it does not make it a bad book. I liked the chapter about Fred and George's Joke Shop, the Quidditch tryout chapter was so funny, and the best part was the Dumbledore death scene. Karma was served at that moment.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow

This was my personal favorite of the books that covered the events of the Second Wizarding War. I know that it is not very common for people to reread this book, but I listen to it on audiobooks all of the time. This book is filled with so much action and interesting plot lines and points. The breaking into the ministry scene is so good and done so much better in the books than in the films.
