Hey guys! It’s your girl and back at it again and since the school year has prematurely come to a close to COVID-19, but I still think that I had a fulfilling and enjoyable first year of high school. So I thought I would reflect and talk about how I felt and the things that I did over the last school year. This year has been an overall roller coaster and an overall whirlwind. This year was drama, love, and widening our horizons as people.
Friendships and Relationships
New Friends: Something I noticed as of now is that at the beginning of the school year, I was holding on to the same people that I came into high school with rather than widen my friendships to other people. It is okay to stay friends with people from past years, but it is also okay to meet new people and make new friends. And if your old friends are mad at you for making other friends; drop them like a hot potato.
Toxic people: Toxic people exist and if people are bringing a constant flow mess into your life, AGAIN DROP THEM LIKE A HOT POTATO! Friends are meant to bring happiness and peace into your life and it’s okay to have a little excitement from drama, but if it happens on the weekly or bi-weekly basis and you are constantly fighting with people; I will advise you to de-friend these people. My friend group was constantly like that and people were messy and dramatic, and I had to remove myself from them for a while. Y’all excitement is great, but peace is a beautiful thing and friends should bring peace and love into your life.
It’s OKAY to Not Have A Crush or A Relationship: Having a boyfriend or even having a crush on someone is not the important, if you don’t want to have a romantic relationship within your freshman year. Personally, I wanted to worry about finding my footing in my new environment and work load within my first year of high school. I really didn't have a crush on anyone because I had better things to worry about and do. Boyfriends especially high school ones don't seem to stay around anyway. But my friends were constantly talking about boys and kind of looked down on me for not even thinking guys were even cute. I don't care anymore, I will be working on my successes and grades while they are sitting their talking about wanting a boyfriend, girlfriend, or romantic partner for hours.
School
Procrastination: This is the most basic problem every student faces. There is a quote that I heard on a Buzzfeed video which was 'Procrastination is a sin' and that is something I tried to live by but I fail every time.I really think that I wasted tons of time on doing absolutely nothing, while I allowed my grades to slip down slowly over the school year man. So when putting things off I always remember "Procrastination is a sin".
Not All Teachers Should Be Teachers: Half of teachers for freshman year were terrible, and it is usually is the insanely easy classes or the insanely hard classes. My worst teachers taught Geometry, English, and Art; lets be honest English and Art are very easy classes to do well in but both of those teachers were trash at their jobs and sucked at teaching me the information. But in easy classes it is easy to teach yourself the information, but the people that annoy me are teachers that suck and teach harder classes like any STEM subjects or AP/Honors/IB classes. Like if you want to be lazy go teach something that does required effort to teach, like some random elective that only like 30 students take as a filler such as Spirit Squad, Yearbook, or Creative Writing. And if you hate children, don't bother working at a school or anywhere where you are going to be surrounded by children. So to solve this whole thing, study ahead. Read the textbook ahead of when the teacher is lecturing the mess.
If Your Friends Won't Be Best For Your Academics Find Some That Are: I am not say to ditch your friends, I am not saying that you should do that; I am saying that become friends with people that you can study and can help you with school work. This is really important when you have a large group of friends that are not really studying type of people. The people around you will influence the way you look at your school work and your attitude towards work.
Talk to People With People In Higher Grade Levels Than You: I really do recommend doing this, because this will save you at times. As a freshman you have no clue really on how each teacher will act, grade, or teach. In clubs, I managed to talk to some older sophomores and upper class-men to understand what to expect. In the summer, I went to freshman camp and talked senior to learn more about the teachers I was going to meet when school starts. They were to that warned me about the nightmare awaiting me English and told me not to easy A will not happen in certain classes. So I truly recommend meeting people outside of your grade level in order to not be blind sided by realities of a lot of classes.
School Events, Clubs, and Sports
Join Something: Y'all tons of freshman don't like to clubs and sports for some reason. I joined five clubs to see what I was interested in and decide what I am going to do senior year to be able to graduate with medals, cords, and stoles for when I graduate. But it's important to feel out the waters within your school and meet some new people. For my school, I have to have 100 community service hours to graduate, so I choose my clubs based off of where I can get my hours. I did Interact Club which gave me 13 hours in one event, Big Brother Big Sister which gives me 10 to 15 hours a semester, and Creativity for Change which was creating art and selling it for charity money.
Go to School Events: I didn't go to Winter Formal or the Valentine's Day Dance because I was not interested in going. I do plan on actually going to dances and school events more, because this past school year I went to only one event and it's because my club sponsored it so I had to go. I think it is important to at least try and get up to go to a school event, because I actually wish that went to those things with my friends.
